How to descale the washing machine?

The more often you use your washing machine, the more lime scale builds up. This can have a detrimental effect on the machine's performance; power consumption may increase while your laundry may not be as clean as it should be. To eliminate the build-up of lime scale on heating elements, hoses, the drum and various small parts, it is therefore important to regularly descale your washing machine.

Siemens is well aware of the negative effects of lime scale on washing machines, especially in hard water areas, and the worst of these effects is a buildup of lime scale on the heating element, which can result in this component being less effective at heating up the water, or even the need for this component to be replaced by an engineer.

Follow these recommendations to descale your washing machine

  • Descale your washing machine every three to six months
  • Use a washing machine descaler. It’s highly recommended to descale with Siemens tested and approved washing machine descaler to protect against the buildup of lime scale deposits and to prolong the life of your appliance.
  • Check the water hardness in your area. The frequency of descaling depends on the water hardness in your area and how often you use your washing machine.

Step by step guide: How to descale the washing machine with a washing machine descaler?

  • Ensure the washing machine is empty and all the laundry is removed
  • Open the detergent drawer and pour the entire contents of the box into the left hand compartment
  • Close the detergent drawer, select a 60°C programme without pre-wash and start the appliance
  • Let the programme run until the end
  • Run the programme again at 60°C, this time without the descaling powder, to thoroughly clean through the appliance and remove any residues. Again let the programme run until completion.
